THE FILMS OF SHINTARO KATSU AND RAIZO ICHIKAWA

Between 1960 and 1970 double features staring Shintaro Katsu & Raizo Ichikawa were the most popular films in all of Japan. Now some thirty years later, Americans will have the opportunity to experience the enormous popularity of there films firsthand in Hollywood.

Coincidentally, both Shintaro Katsu and Raizo Ichikawa were of the same age and debuted in the same film, However their acting styles differed greatly.

Shintatro Katsu lived in the moment, rising upon his feelings when acting. Raizo Ichikawa on the other hand invested much time in studying and incorporating the forms of others. Over time Ichikawa's own distinct acting style was born. Despite their differing approaches, both Shintaro and Raizo enjoyed enormous commercial success.

Memories of Shintaro Katsu & Raizo Ichikawa by Tokuzo Tanaka

During the 1960s, Shintaro Katsu and Raizo Ichikawa were two of the biggest stars in Japanese cinema. Upon hearing of the American Cinemathque's plans to screen a series of films starring these two great actors, I was overwhelmed by the warmest of memories. Amongst the films that you will see, it is my belief that Zatoichi and Kyosiro Nemuri best exemplify the spirit and work of Shintaro Katsu and Raizo Ichikawa. I am sure that were the both of them to be still alive today, they would take great pleasure knowing that American audiences were being entertained by their films.

For me I am deeply honored that of the nine films that the American Cinemathque has chosen to screen, two were directed by myself. Both "Zatoichi Enters Again" and "Zatoichi, The Fugitive "star the title character, Zatoichi, a complex and dark yakuza.

That American audiences will have the opportunity to view my work brings great joy to my heart; I hope that I can likewise bring them great joy!
